I HAVE FINALLY MADE IT!

My creative story began when…

Have you ever experienced the urge to get up and do something? To grab that old dusty notebook, frayed brushes and almost dried paints?

Well, welcome to my world.

IN THE STUDIO

I am a creative who have found her voice through the mixed media and acrylics. I am an artist whose love of colour has built the bridges between the norm and the extraordinary.

When I paint I look at the subject with my inner eyes, the eyes of my beloved Suki, the sweetest and naughty Bichon Frise who is no longer with us. I am searching for the unheard, the unseen. Hence my use of colour does not always match the standards. I let my feelings guide my brush.

I was born in the Czechoslovakia in early seventies of last century and although I went to an art school in Prague, I wasn’t able to study my preferred subject because they said I didn’t have enough talent. Instead, I was allowed to learn how to print and bind books even though my heart was longing after something more.

And then life happened, marriage, divorce, daughter… Struggles and short lived happiness drawn me to creative writing. When I met Zuzana, my partner for 23 years, my life turned upside down. We moved cities and countries, lived in the UK for over 14 years and currently residing in Portugal. It was Zuzana, and later Suki, who have always encouraged me in my creativity. After such a long gap I started painting again; that was back in the UK, now over 15 years ago. From a very humble beginnings afraid to make a mistake, my strokes grew bolder and more colourful with each painting. I dare to say my style is constantly developing. I also like to explore different subjects hence my gallery has a few subcategories.

It is not only painting that I do; on the contrary; I love working with my hands and from time to time I need to switch the medium if you know what I mean. Then I saw, I felt, I crotchet…you name it. I also love learning new techniques and whenever I find something that catches my eye, I usually end up having a go at it whatever it might be.

When it comes to this website, I have finally made it! I’ve been thinking and pondering about having my own space on internet for very long time. There was something stopping me. Perhaps fear, self esteem, lack of knowledge…who knows. Earlier this year, when I was looking at Suki’s painting I made last year some months after she died, I felt that this needs to be seen.

My art needs to get out there. How else will people know what I am doing? How else can they appreciate and buy my paintings or prints? Up until this point I have been hiding behind Facebook or Instagram knowing the algorithm is very unlikely to find me and introduce to a wider audience. Quite a safe place to be, however, not very productive. My dear friend helped me to set it up and guide me through the process. I am so very grateful to her for her time, skills and expertise.

My website is not only designed to sell my art but also help other creatives who, like me, are struggling to get out there. We all need encouragement at times, inspiration and cheering on. We can learn from each other and appreciate the work and time behind our creations.

Enough rambling for now.

Don’t hesitate, subscribe to my newsletter and feel free to browse or buy my art. In the meantime, be creative, be bold and don’t let others telling you you haven’t got enough talent.

Much love

Your Sonia

Congratulations, Sonia! The website is fabulous, just like your work. I had a professor tell me the same. You’ve certainly proved them wrong! I hope it brings you a nice income!
